Shading Cloud-Soft Wool and Pastoral Pastures

The secret to making a white sheep look round and puffy on flat white paper lies in gentle shading techniques:

• The Fluffy White Fleece: Instead of leaving the wool completely uncolored, trace along the scalloped curves of each curly cloud cluster with light silver-gray, soft sky-blue, or warm buttercream pencils to create soft three-dimensional volume.
• The Valais Blacknose Breed: Give your drawing an adorable look inspired by the famous Swiss mountain breed by shading the entire face, ears, and knee patches in solid charcoal-black while keeping the wool body snow-white.
• The Majestic Bighorn Ram: Use deep walnut-brown and dusty gray across the muscular body, highlighting the heavy curved horns with warm ochre and ridged shading lines to show growth rings.

Rectangular Eyes and Incredible Social Intelligence

• Panoramic Horizontal Pupils: A sheep's eyes feature horizontal, rectangular-shaped pupils that provide a panoramic view of over three hundred degrees. This allows them to watch for predators in almost every direction without lifting their heads from grazing grass.
• Recognizing Fifty Different Faces: Scientific studies show that sheep have sophisticated facial recognition abilities similar to humans. They can remember and distinguish the individual facial expressions of at least fifty different sheep and human handlers for over two years.
• Natural Waterproof Wool: A sheep's wool coat is naturally saturated with a waxy, water-repellent substance called lanolin. This protective layer ensures rainwater rolls right off the outer wool tips, keeping the animal dry, warm, and comfortable in heavy pasture storms.
